This work was inspired by a poem by Yogananda titled 'Samadhi'. The title comes from the line "From joy I came, for joy I live, in sacred joy I melt." The idea was to create a melting/floating landscape of energy moving freely across the canvas. If it evokes birds, insects or petals carried on the wind then I am happy. Or if the viewer feels they are looking at the movement of atoms then that too is a valid response. I aim to find the sublime in the most humble of nature's forms. There are many asemic marks, layers of glazes of thin oil paint and some impasto areas. My main influences are Turner, Bosch, Monet and Chu Teh Chun. Signed verso.

My work lies somewhere between abstraction and naturalism. I think of them as ‘dreamscapes’—part memory, part imagination. I usually begin with images of natural elements such as flora and fauna or figurative elements. The finished works are sometimes purely abstract, sometimes more representational. The most successful ones have a mysterious, hard to read quality and a feeling of impermanence. The process is as important as the subject to me. I apply multiple layers over a long period of time, scratching and sanding back to reveal temporarily hidden elements that then inspire further marks.
